AdvantageHOPE currently has an eleven member board of directors. Board members are volunteers and represent a diverse cross-section of the community.
How are new directors chosen?
When a board member vacates their seat, AdvantageHOPE advertises for the new position in the lead-up to the Annual General Meeting in March. We advertise in the Hope Standard as well as through our website and social media. Interested parties submit an application that highlights their skills and interests.
The qualifications and skills of prospective directors are then entered into a matrix that allows the review committee to ensure the skills of board members complement one another. It also ensures that we have the most qualified board possible.
AdvantageHOPE then passes the applicants and our recommendation(s) to the District for approval. The District then appoints the board member(s) whose skills they feel are best suited for the role.
Are board meetings open to the public?
Not usually, no. The AdvantageHOPE board is a dynamic group that likes to talk and debate issues about which they are passionate. The board works collaboratively to brainstorm ideas and solutions – it is a place where there is no bad idea or opinion. Through trial and error, we found that the board discussions tended to be less dynamic when there was a regular audience. As a result, we did not get to explore as many outside-the-box solutions and ideas.
The most important part of our discussions – the results – are always made available to the public. Our meeting minutes are posted here.
Should someone want to discuss a specific issue with the board, they are invited to discuss attending the meeting as a special delegation with the Chair.
The board values the input of the community.
AdvantageHOPE is not a faceless organization: we are members of the community and we rely on community feedback to make the best decisions possible. Closed meetings allow us to debate, but our debates are informed by what we know about the community. We welcome you to help us know your point-of-view, so that it can be represented at the table.
