Climbing & Bouldering in Hope, Cascades & Canyons

Climbing

Hope and the surrounding area has some great climbing and bouldering locations. There are many more locations that are not officially mapped and shared through word-of-mouth, but here are a few that are well known.

1. Yak Peak

Description: Yak Peak is great for granite climbing. It’s 6,693 feet tall with 1,640 feet of prominence. There is a trail to the summit which is accessible during the summer months. The hike is about 4 miles rountrip with an elevation gain of about 2,755 feet. Allow approximately 6.5 hours to climb this summit via trail in good weather. A couple of the  amazing rock climbing routes on this peak are “Yak Check and Yak Crack.”

2. Box Canyon

Description: There are 4 routes that are 4-5 star granite. Wall 3 (east side from right to left) Wall 3 has the only known rock routes in this canyon.  A new logging road provides access further up the wall. Coordinates: N49°57.31′  W-121°18.82′ Elevation: 3,000′

3. Nicolum Knob

Description: Nicolum Knob is the south facing granite buttress that is visible above the junction of Highways 3 and 5 just east of Hope. Nicolum Knob has granite cracks, technical face and slab on small holds and slopers.  There are steeper sections separated by ledges which make for comfortable, multi-pitch climbing and rappels.

Description: Banana Ledge is located on the left (west) side of the trail gully and Highway 12. There is one established climb and one project above.

— ECOLOGY LEDGE AREA
Description: Ecology Ledge is located above Kokanee Slab and must be accessed by climbing an established route in that area or by rapping in from above (3 raps).

Bouldering

1. Silver Lake

Great granite bouldering with lots of variety. There is also forested, riverside climbing that is near camping.

2. Old Hope

Easy to access with some incredible problems such as “Blade of Lightning” and “Leviathan.” This area offers lots of variety and the problems are close in proximity to each other.

3. Hunter Creek

Hunter Creek is full of large granite boulders that are scattered throughout a forest (below a slide area). Around 130 problems ranging from VB to V11. This guide will only cover 20-30 problems at the Goldfinger trailhead and the Road Rage Boulders, along with some select problems throughout the forest.
