The Japanese Friendship Garden

The Japanese Friendship Garden in Hope Memorial Park was presented to the town of Hope on July 27, 1991. The garden was built by local Japanese Canadians to commemorate the Japanese interned during World War II in the Tashme Camp, located approximately 20km east of Hope on Highway 3. The small garden consists of yew hedges, three large cherry trees, pond and stone waterfall. As well as hostas, ferns, black pine and japanese maples. A small stone lantern at the north end of the pond reads, “Erected through proceeds from the 1976 Tashme Reunion held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Don Mills, Toronto Ontario.”
